It is a rare occasion to see how the other countries see the winter war of Finland (1939-40) and when I stumbled across this british documentary I knew I had to share it. It’s a brilliant show! World War 2: the complete history.

Quite good new book …
Quite good new book of this is GF Sanders Battle of Finland 1939-1940. It also says that last decent war was our winter war, I agree. Later war was also not reason of us but SU, and if we’ve had enough firepower, at least things had change bit, not everything. In my opinion I know quite many russians, part of them are my best friends. I dont have any bad feelings cause we didnt make history, others made.

The question isn’t …
The question isn’t about can, its about want. Russia can for sure if they want. Like they are giving areas back to China. Finland had to signed documents because they had to. They would have wanted to keep Karelia and other finnish areas. Russia has been signed a agreement of the final act of the conference on security and cooperation in Europe. It says that borders can be changed In Europe peacefully. The agreement is because there is some border issues in Europe as we know.
Sorry, but we can’t …
Sorry, but we can’t squander our territories. We paid a bloody price for it + Finland signed the documents.
Besides, we can not give precedent for other countries like Japan (Southern Kuril Islands), Germany (Königsberg) and other…

Yes, you are right. …
Yes, you are right. Your own soldiers couldn’t understand Stalin’s actions. Many times they asked that why we need this war. Finnish people don’t need it and russians don’t need it either (about the Winter War). Now Russia would make a right thing if they would start conversation with Finland about those lost finnish areas. I can’t really understand why russian’s are so stubborn that they don’t even want to talk about it. Those areas are not important for Russia, you don’t need to be a bully.
Even when finnish …
Even when finnish troops lost the main defence line, they were fighting hard. Like USSR didn’t get the Vyborg during the Winter War by guns. If Stalin would have continued the attack to Finland, he would have signed USSR’s fate with Germany. Allied would have declared war against USSR. Like USSR lost its membership on the League of Nations. Stalin knew that very well so he made a peace but didn’t believe it will be the last. Stalin had his own plan for Finland as Molotov’s actions reveal.
USSR started the …
USSR started the Winter War with 21 divisions and ended it with 58 divisions. Finnish army had only 8 divisions at the start of the war. Finnish divisions were 4th, 5th, 6th (later it was 3th), 8th, 10th (later 7th), 11th, 12th, 13th. It was miracle that your troops couldn’t really broken through our defence earlier. Like Mannerheim said himself that mannerheim line will hold a week to 10 days. Finnish troops haven’t enough of ammo for example so they couldn’t have last too long.
Anyway, it was …
Anyway, it was unjust war on our part. Too much imperialistic behavior of USSR.
In the winter war, …
In the winter war, you fought against numerous in several times soviet troops until the moment as they have broken through your defenses, and Finland asked peace agreement. But in WW2 we more worried about Germans, not about Finland. We protected our positions more and waited. By the end of the war we began offensive operations and Finland lost almost all of the defensive positions. If the Soviet Union sent more troops, then Finland could become dependent state with high percentage probability.

“Finns were in a panic towards the end of the war; your comrades left suicide-riflemen against their own volition during the retreating”
This is same kind of stories as finnish snipers sitting on trees. Few days ago I read a book of russian soldiers in Continuation War. They believed that finnish troops leave some snipers behind which shoot all people who comes after finns. This is just a tale.
Finnish troops …
Finnish troops never went into panic, they organize defence on many places which gave a chance to retreat. Russians had many times more men. It’s true that finnish soldiers weren’t ready at first because of long trench warfare phase which cost some losses for finns. At the end of war, front was stabilise by finns. Russians lost the attack, they used their live power and troops weren’t workable anymore. Finnish troops also surrounded and destroyed 176th and 289th divisions in Ilomantsi.
The Mannerheim line …
The Mannerheim line wasn’t even ready and it wasn’t as strong as you keep saying. We stopped a small handful of russians? You don’t seem to know much about these wars. In Karelia, which was red army’s main battle direction, there was 3 main armies (if you don’t know what army is in military language, find out) 21th, 23th and 59th which included 14 army corps + other troops. I have full list of those troops. From Ladoga to Polar sea, there was 7th, 14th, 19th 26th, 32th armies.

Mannerheim line in …
Mannerheim line in very bottleneck, between Baltic Sea and Lake Ladoga (very easy to defence). Your fortifications, even now there, among other things.
You stopped a small handful of Russians in 1944, and it was a miracle for Finns. Russia with Germany at this time, Finland was not so important.
Facts: Finns were in a panic towards the end of the war; your comrades left suicide-riflemen against their own volition during the retreating (tied to trees and stones, by ropes and chains).
Mannerheim line has …
Mannerheim line has been compared to Maginot line by mostly russians. There was totally 101 concrete fortifications on Mannerheim line at the beginning of Winter War but about in same length of Maginot line there was 5 800 fortifications.
Qlasettaja is right, the myth of Mannerheim line is still living.
In the end of WW2 …
In the end of WW2 Finland has been fought bravely of its independence. Stalin made a massive attack against Finland in summer 1944. His (stavka’s) plans prove that he had no intention to stop attack if they beat the finnish army in Karelia. Unfortunately for russians, Finland stopped that massive attack. Finnish army was in poor stage at the start of attack because of long trench warfare. Stalin didn’t want to loose more men that he did already against Finland so the peace was good for him.
Stalin said that …
Stalin said that Soviet Union won’t never want a piece of foreign land, we are an enemy of imperialistic countries. When USSR attacked against Finland, many of russians didn’t believe in those lies anymore. They didn’t believe that finnish workers need liberation when they lived better than russians. They also wondered which was that so called “national government”. They knew it was puppet government of USSR in same way as Japan did with China. USSR wanted to occupy the Finland.
Are you still …
Are you still believing on that nonsense? Finland was giving land that Soviet Union asked from Karelia. Finland couldn’t accept the request of Hanko which was close to finnish capital Helsinki. Hanko wasn’t a threat of USSR. Imagine that you give land for your enemy inside of your borders, which is also close to Moscow. Would you give it? Finland was ready to rent islands close of Hanko but it wasn’t enough for USSR. It would have given same protect on Baltic Sea as Hanko.

There was just few bunkers. Finn’s used trenches in Mannerheim line. In Raate Finns attacked in night, like guerillas.

The occupation of Finland was not in plan of the USSR. The ultimatum had only one requirement, to move the USSR-Finland border on a some hundred kilometers.

Can you truly say you won?
You did not achieve ANY objective (destruction of Finnish army, occupation of Finland, supplanting the lawful finnish government with a soviet puppet regime). In either war. You only forced us to sue for peace. We came out bruised, but alive. You came out bruised and bleeding.
Pyrrhic victory is no victory if you cannot even achieve your original objectives.
